Ontario QSO Party
Friday afternoon saw me working on my antennas for the Ontario QSO Party.В I have some extra antennas I put up for contests and special events and then take down after.В With my limited size back yard (many time you have read about the massive 20 foot square farm) its hard to operate seriously but for this contest I managed the following:
HF was my W3EDP Antenna which works 10m to 160m and the radio used was my FT847 with my LDG Z100В Autotuner
6m was with a copper pipe dipole aimed east-west and was orignally intended to be hooked up on my FT847 but was feeding back so I guess its time for some choke filters…В The dipole was hooked up to my FT 897 with no problems whats so ever…
2m was with a full wave horizontal loop on the same masting as the 6m dipole so the loop was at 30 feet above ground and the dipole was about 25 feet above the ground.В The radio for 2m was going to be the FT 847 but once the 6m side was messing up I decided to run the FT 897 for the VHF band as well and keep the FT 847 for HF only.
The FT 847 was working fine ( on all bands ) on the Friday evening when antenna testing took place but on Saturday afternoon I was forced to change things once the contest started.В I’m thinking it had something do do with the amount of rain we had…
As far as the scores went… I tried really hard on the Saturday (this contest is split into two sessions) but my score did not show it.В On Sunday I just could not get really interested and really gave up around noon and decided to enjoy the rest of the day without radio.В I really was not pleased with my results.
